Bipolar Disorder Is More Than Everyday Mood Changes.
Bipolar disorder involves distinct mood episodes, which may include depression and periods of mania or hypomania. Experiences vary from person to person.
Depressive Episodes
Low mood, reduced energy, loss of interest, or difficulty functioning.
Mania or Hypomania
Elevated or unusually irritable mood, with changes in energy and activity.
Changes in Sleep
A reduced need for sleep during elevated moods, or disrupted sleep patterns.
Racing Thoughts
Rapid thinking or difficulty slowing down during certain episodes.
Impulsive Decisions
Changes in judgment or risk-taking during elevated mood states.
Everyday Disruptions
Strain on relationships, routines, or work during mood episodes.
Not everyone experiences all of these, and they are not a checklist. Only an appropriate clinical evaluation can determine whether symptoms are related to bipolar disorder or another concern.
Personalized Care Within a Broader Treatment Plan.
Therapy may focus on understanding mood patterns, recognizing changes that warrant attention, and building strategies that support daily life, coordinated with other treating professionals when appropriate.
Understanding Mood Patterns
Noticing changes in mood, sleep, energy, or behavior that may signal an emerging episode.
Routines & Daily Functioning
Exploring practical ways to keep consistent routines, including sleep and activity patterns.
Coping & Emotional Regulation
Building psychological skills for stress, emotions, relationships, and everyday responsibilities.
Coordinated Treatment
Bipolar treatment commonly involves medical or psychiatric care, with psychotherapy supporting the broader plan.
OPAL provides psychological therapy, not medication management. Medication decisions belong with licensed prescribing clinicians. Therapy cannot guarantee that future episodes will not occur, and severe mania, psychosis, severe depression, or safety concerns may require a higher level of care.

Questions About Bipolar Disorder Therapy?
How is bipolar disorder different from depression?
Both can involve depressive symptoms, but bipolar disorder also includes episodes of mania or hypomania. The distinction matters for assessment and treatment planning, and a qualified professional can help determine what evaluation or care may be appropriate.
Can therapy help if I’m already receiving medication treatment?
Yes. Psychotherapy can complement psychiatric care by addressing stress, coping, routines, relationships, and recognition of potential mood changes. Medication decisions should be discussed with your prescribing clinician.
Does OPAL offer bipolar therapy in person and online?
OPAL offers in-person appointments in La Jolla and virtual therapy for eligible clients located in California. The right format depends on individual clinical needs and clinician availability.
