What Is Trauma?

Trauma lives less in the event itself and more in how your nervous system responds to it. Sometimes that response comes from a single overwhelming moment, like an accident or an assault. Other times it builds gradually, through neglect, emotional harm, or an environment that never felt safe. Trauma can also be carried across generations, or shaped by the ongoing weight of discrimination and marginalization — a reality many in BIPOC and LGBTQIA2S+ communities know well.

Whatever its source, trauma has a way of keeping the body on alert long after the threat has passed. Left unaddressed, it can quietly reshape how you feel, how you relate to others, and how you see yourself.

Trauma Symptoms

  • A sense of living in survival mode, even when nothing is actively wrong
  • Difficulty trusting others, staying connected, or holding boundaries
  • Emotional numbness, disconnection, or shutting down
  • Persistent guilt, shame, or a sense of not being enough
  • Flashbacks, nightmares, or memories that intrude even when you don't want them to
  • Physical symptoms like headaches, stomach issues, or chronic pain
  • Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Steering clear of people, places, or situations that bring it back
  • A near-constant sense of anxiety or being on edge

Ways to Treat Trauma

Trauma-Informed Care

An approach that centers safety, choice, and trust at every step, so treatment never feels like it's happening to you.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Processing traumatic memories and shifting the beliefs about yourself and the world that trauma can leave behind.

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

A structured, trauma-specific approach that helps you examine and shift the "stuck points" trauma creates in how you think about yourself, others, and the world.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Building skills to regulate the intense emotion and distress that trauma symptoms can bring up.

Mind-Body & Somatic Work

Reconnecting with a nervous system that's been stuck in survival mode, and helping the body feel safe again.
