Therapy That Meets You Where You Are

Dr. Kai approaches mental health from a human-first, skills-based perspective. He doesn’t assume that struggling means something is wrong with you. Often, it means no one ever taught you the skills for what you’re facing, such as naming your emotions, separating thoughts from feelings, coping with distress, or staying flexible when life gets hard.

In sessions, that looks like warmth paired with honest, direct support. You work together to understand yourself better and to build practical skills you can use outside the therapy room.

A San Diego native and SDSU alum, Dr. Kai returned to La Jolla, the community where he grew up.

Therapy can be a place to reconnect with who you are, without having to pretend that everything is okay.

What Brings You Here?

People come to therapy for many different reasons. You don’t have to have everything figured out before getting started.

Anxiety & Overthinking

Does your mind keep running long after you’ve tried to switch it off?

Worry, racing thoughts, and constant second-guessing can take up a lot of room. Dr. Kai works with adolescents and adults navigating anxiety, including performance-related anxiety.

Therapy can help you understand what’s feeding the worry and build skills for responding to it.

Stress & Burnout

Do you feel like you’re always expected to perform, even when you’re running on empty?

Demanding work and high expectations can wear anyone down. Dr. Kai has particular experience with professionals and high performers in high-pressure environments.

Therapy can provide space to explore stress, expectations, boundaries, and ways of responding to pressure.

Relationships & Communication

Do the same tensions keep showing up with the people who matter most?

Relationship concerns are one of the areas Dr. Kai works with, and his approach draws on attachment theory to understand how relationships shape us.

Therapy may help you notice your own patterns and practice new ways of connecting and communicating.

Life Changes & Transitions

Has a big change left you unsure who you are or what comes next?

New chapters, losses, and turning points can unsettle even the most capable people, even when the change is a welcome one.

Therapy can offer room to sort through uncertainty and think about what matters to you now.

Identity & Personal Growth

Do you ever feel like you’re wearing a mask to meet other people’s expectations?

Dr. Kai works with identity development and self-doubt, helping people reconnect with who they are beyond what they feel expected to be.

Therapy can be a place to better understand those patterns and take more authorship over your own story.

Performance Pressure & Confidence

Does a standard you set for yourself feel impossible to meet?

Dr. Kai supports athletes and other high performers facing performance pressure, self-doubt, and the weight of achievement.

Therapy may help you build tools for staying grounded and explore your relationship with success and setbacks.

Attachment-Based Perspectives

Trauma-Informed Care

Therapy for Men Navigating Life’s Pressures

Men come to therapy for many different reasons, and there’s no single profile. Dr. Kai works with men, and his practice isn’t limited to them. This is one of several areas of his work.

Therapy doesn’t require having all the answers. Sometimes it starts with wanting to better understand what’s going on, how you’re responding, and what you would like to change.
